Mommy's Day
It wasn't even Mother's Day, but it probably should've been--the day "Mommy," one of the most courageous dogs we've seen in a long time, came to Home At Last. Mommy was found by Paul, a Home At Last volunteer, in a Lexington, Ky. park. Starved nearly to death and scared of everything that moved, this German shepherd was in sad shape.
Against all odds, Mommy had evidently just nursed a litter of pups after being unceremoniously tossed out of whatever barely passed for a home of her own. Scavenging for bits and pieces of garbage was the only way Mommy could provide any nourishment at all for her pups. After the pups were nursed, there was next to nothing left for Mommy's own body. Her time was running out, but her will to live, to provide for her young, somehow kept her going.
Tim and Carol, Home At Last members from Lexington, jumped right in to help Paul get her to the vet and then provided foster care for Mommy. Unfortunately, she was found to have heartworms in addition to severe malnourishment. After a week with Tim and Carol, Mommy came to Home At Last where she's fed special meals and supplements that are helping her slowly gain back her strength. Soon, she'll be treated for heartworms. She won't suffer any more, and she'll never go hungry again.
As fate would have it, Mommy's gift--that last ounce of mothering care she could muster-- wasn't in vain. The same person who found Mommy also found what we believe was one of her puppies, miraculously still alive, shivering in the snowy cold, desperately in need of a warm home. The puppy, now named Eli, didn't have to look any further. He has a home with Paul and Carrie, who found him, and he can rest assured that his mommy who gave up so much to keep him alive has found her own home at last. Soon they'll see each other once again. We believe that should make them both happy.
