The Courage of A Dog and Convictions of Kind People

"If man aspires to a righteous life, his first act of abstinence is from injury to any animal."  Leo Tolstoy

He was such a pitiful sight when he first came to Home At Last.  In pain from many broken bones and bloated with infection, this fellow was a sight for sore eyes.  He'd fallen victim to severe abuse and had been taken in by a nearby county shelter, the first step in a chain of events that proved fate was smiling on Braveheart.  He was named Braveheart by Jay, a longtime volunteer, because of the courage he demonstrated while fighting for what was most important to him--his very life.

He is never hostile or angry and seems to understand why he's here.  Braveheart is the leader of our little dog village where he's treated like a king.  He's seen quite a few dogs come and go, and someday we know a special person will come along to take him to retirement on the couch.  For now, he's extremely happy in the life he lives at Home At Last.

Braveheart is a wonderful symbol of the compassion of animal rescue.  From coast to coast, hundreds of thousands of kind people are getting involved.  New rescue/adoption groups and sanctuaries are springing with great frequency.  And the work has made a difference.  Spay/neuter and adoption has reduced the number of animals euthanized by shelters considerably in the last few years.  Although those numbers are still far too high, spaying, neutering, and adopting is making a serious impact.  The kindness movement works because of the wonderful support of caring individuals who faithfully and generously donate funds and volunteer time.  Without that support, animal rescue could not succeed.

Thanks to all of you who help animals in your own special ways.  Please continue to support animal advocates who speak for those who can't speak for themselves.  Saving animals in need is righteous work, and you make it happen.  You are their salvation.
